You'll find only one North American hotel on the 2017 Green Hotelier Awards list, and it's likely a familiar name. Carbondale's Marble Distilling Co. & The Distillery Inn received a spot on the awards' highly commended list, alongside Novotel Jaragua in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Peru's El Albergue Ollantaytambo took the top spot in the Americas category.
The annual awards examine hotels' efforts to reduce energy and waste, as well as how the businesses relate to their communities.
"We really loved your ethos and commitment to sustainability, and community and you were a very close second to our winner," Siobhan O'Neill, editor of Green Hotelier, said in a news release.
Marble Distilling has also received recent recognition in a Sierra Club article about socially conscious spirits and a Master's Medal in Green Initiatives from The Global Distillery Masters.
"We are honored to receive these prestigious awards, and that people are beginning to realize that you can embrace sustainable business practices and systems to create unique offerings," co-founder and head distiller Connie Baker said in a release. "Not only do we distill first-rate spirits and provide guests with a unique luxury travel experience, we are saving 4.1 million gallons of water annually and recapturing enough energy annually to power 20 homes."
