2017 is off to a great start! Christiana Axelsen was our first Artist in Residence the week of January 28- February 4. We were lucky to have Sumi Clements and Meg Madorin come work with her. Christiana taught an exuberant workshop and performed her work in progress with Sumi and Meg to the delight of our increasingly educated modern dance community. Christiana also challenged the CoMotion dancers in the two company classes she conducted. Please watch this beautiful, short video by Muse Motion about Christiana's residency.
Speaking of the CoMotion dancers (led by Deborah Colley, Dance Initiative’s Associate Director)...they performed a wonderful variety of pieces in “She” the Green is the New Black Fashion show produced by Carbondale Arts. Dance Initiative is exceedingly proud of its relationship with CoMotion and impressed by its development into a strong group of professional dancers.
Coming up in May, there are two terrific events. We will be joined the weekend of May 13 & 14 by Melissa Toogood, a New York dance artist, Bessie Performance award winner and a former Merce Cunningham Dance Company member. She will teach a workshop, perform a selection of solos at the Launchpad on the 13th and teach a CoMotion company class of the 14th.
The following week, Marielis Garcia and David Norsworthy will spend a week in residence at the Launchpad. Marielis and David will focus on generating material inspired by the community fabric of Carbondale and its surroundings. They will source material from the community in two workshops on May 23 & 25, 6:15-7:45pm and will present their work in progress on Saturday May 27 at 7:30 pm.
Our in-school dance program is finished for the Spring. (We need to convince the schools that dance outdoors is even better than inside!) Word of mouth has been such that we have been invited to put a program in place for the Ross Montessori School. We are very excited about this program and the impact it is already having on our community.
Come watch some dance with us in May!
